I rate the impact of this book on me 1 out of 5. This is its impact on me, its not about the quality of the book.
It was tough to read because it felt more like an academic research paper and less like a book. The author constantly cited different parts of the book, tables, graphs, or charts, which made it hard to consume as an audiobook.
The insights weren’t actionable for me. It’s not that the book is bad or poorly researched—it includes original research, which is great. However, there wasn’t much I could implement from it. I rate books based on the impact they have on me, and this one didn’t offer much practical value for me.
Below are a few key points or insights I took away from the book:
-The time from code committed to code running in production matters. Reduce this.
-High-performing companies deploy faster. This leads to lower lead times and higher-quality deployments.
-Very valuable to invest in Continuous deployment process and tooling.
-3 statistically valid metrics for evaluating software team performance: lead time, release frequency, and time to restore.
-Low-performing teams are more likely to rely on custom third-party software.
-But, non-custom standard third-party software is good. Using SaaS tools for non-core tasks, like Microsoft Office, is a good investment.
While these insights are helpful, they didn’t significantly impact me.
