Designing Your Life: Build a Life that Works for You

Book Review: 5/5 Impact On Me (Book By Bill Burnett, Dave Evans)

Read more about the book here

I love the first six chapters of this book. After that, everything about applying for jobs via referrals was not new to me. In the first several chapters, I used the information directly. The exercises were step-by-step and helpful when I was at a career pivot point in 2024. They helped me evaluate the direction I wanted to go and consider different opportunities.

I rate the impact of this book on me as 5 out of 5 because I implemented the exercises. I liked the mind map exercise and the five-year plan exercise. I also liked thinking about a work view and a life view and connecting the dots between them.

I didn't like creating a visual representation of my mind map because I did not understand its significance. Creating a five-year plan was unrealistic because humans are not good at planning. However, it forced me to think about what's next. For example, what's the next step if I want to be a product manager? Is it becoming the head of product in a startup, the director of product in a big company, or becoming a startup founder?

Similarly, if I want to write content, what's the next step beyond that? If I am writing content in 2024, what will I do in 2028?
