I expected this book to teach me more about building relationships and networks with friends and acquaintances. However, its content was different. So that reduced the value I got from it. The book focuses on a mathematical perspective of networks, including internet networking and social connections. I found it interesting that once upon a time graphs and nodes were a novel way to describe networks.
It discusses the concept of six degrees of separation. I liked its clarification that six degrees is the median number of separation degrees, but the separation ranged from two to several dozen in the original experiments. It also offers an interesting anecdotal explanation of Hollywood's interconnectedness using the Kevin Bacon website. It mentions that being part of a circle increases the likelihood of strong connections among members.
The book simplifies complex mathematical concepts, but I was unsure about how to apply this knowledge after reading. While the book is well-written, it did not significantly impact me.
